As a Caribbean feminist, writer and cultural activist, I have used literature, specifically poetry, to provide an understanding and perspective of the impact of colonization on the psyche of Caribbean people and what needs to be done to reverse this trend. Change seldom begins from an intellectual exercise, but more often from a personal and often visceral penetration, and poetry is one proven way to engage people, to get them to think and reflect through feeling. The psychological damage of colonization has been explored by numerous scholars and poets, specifically from the Caribbean, which integrates, history, culture and sociology.
