Thinking White Backwards: Disrupting Missionary Culture in Zambia through Photography
Edith Chiliboy, Patrick Chilaisha, and Kerstin Hacker propose a workshop across two late afternoons, that will creatively discuss the rupture introduced by missionaries on Zambia’s culture.
The workshop aims to instigate a visual conversation between the religious objects and modern everyday life in Berlin. It will ask the participants to question how these objects can influence their understanding of coloniality and missionary practices on the African continent.
In the first session, the artists will challenge participants to experience the religious symbols and produce photographic evidence of their interaction by identifying everyday situations that will be interrupted/ruptured by such symbols. Participants will be asked to recognise the affective response to the symbols in group work.
